The following bumper sticker reads
"That's Right I'm clinging to my Guns and Religion"
This has to be one of the most absurd bumper stickers I have seen. Firstly, I'm reassured that while most love to express their political views on the backside of their automobiles, they rarely get out of them to go vote. This slogan stuck with me in a few ways, but mostly at associating "religion" with "guns".
I'm going to take a leap of "faith" here and say this "religion" being applied is "Christian". I do so based on the demographics of this region. I feel that's a safe assumption.
When I was raised in a Catholic home attending mass 6 out of 7 days a week I never got the memo about Jesus' endorsement of weapons. I endured many a mass growing up and NOT once did I hear about Jesus advocating weapons. So I'm left with a few questions for the driver of this vehicle. How can you cling to a religion that promotes peace and love and to your gun at the same time without feeling some sort of dissonance?

It is distressing how often people "cling" to things that they don't understand.
so true! People try to read into things which are not really there. The Bible is about peace and forgiveness. But, when I read that bumper sticker, I don't think he/she is trying to put guns in the middle of religion. (my opinion) I think he/she is just talking about things that government so many times tries to stick their nose into every personal freedom that we have. The right to carry arms and the freedom of religion are hot buttons in the south! :D (and other places) So to me, that person is just promoting personal freedom. Not that I'd be putting that sticker on my car anytime soon! LOL
ReplyDeleteI hear what you're saying and there is definitely some truth to it. Short of pulling this person over and asking I can't say either way. My beef is the idea that anyone could "cling" to two vastly different concepts at the same time. It would be the equivalent of me having a sticker that said "i'm clinging to my donuts and diet" Jesus = peace and love... weapons = means of violence (even in protection it's still violence it's just often justified)
